It's official, the start to One Book One Valley 2017 (OBOV) is off and running! For those of you who don't know what OBOV is, it is a grassroots initiative that promotes the reading of a single title throughout the spring and promotes community engagement through involvement with book discussions, programming around the title, and culminates in an author visit and celebration. This year BMHS & EVHS are proudly partnering with OBOV and are bringing programming right to the students.
And the big reveal is . . . The High Divide by Lin Enger. The High Divide follows the journey of the Pope family as Gretta Pope wakes up one morning in 1886 to find that her husband, Ulysses, has left his wife and two sons behind. This story chronicles the Pope family's journey as the young Pope boys take off in the night after their father and Gretta must in turn go after her sons and hopefully find her husband and answers. A novel that paints an astonishing portrait not only of the western prairie, but also of family, sacrifice, mystery, and the question of how far should one go to recover something lost. Stay tuned for more to come with OBOV at BMHS, but also check out the OBOV website for information about events around the valley. Happy Reading! These snowy days are great for getting up on the mountain and then curling up by a cozy fireplace with a great read. Need a suggestion? Try Krystal Sutherland's Our Chemical Hearts. This book took me by surprise with how much I loved it! Told in the male perspective of senior, Henry Page who thinks he has life pretty dialed in for himself. He's got college applications lined up and has landed the coveted spot as the editor for his school newspaper, not the most glamorous position, but one he's worked hard to get. He also has his best friends Lola and Murray that keep him on his toes and give him plenty of company. Henry Page is convinced that high school romance could never compare to the rom-com romance that he sees in his parent's lives and is therefore completely uninterested in any kind of relationship, of course that is until Grace Town walks into his life. Henry and Grace's relationship is nothing like the movies and a far cry from the romances found in love stories. Grace is moody, elusive, mysterious, mean, and altogether the weirdest girl Henry has ever met, which might be exactly why he falls irrevocably in love with her despite all the warning signs and advice from his friends. Follow Henry through the trials of loving someone without truly knowing all of their broken pieces and you'll experience Henry's cringe-worthy moments as he falls deeper and deeper for Grace and you'll want to pull him back from the edge. Filled with beautiful words and experiences that speak to anyone that has ever loved someone they shouldn't this book will have you falling in love and heartbreak all over again. Our Chemical Hearts can be found in the Realistic section on our shelves. Give it a try, I bet you can't put it down. As we kick off a new year here at the library it's never a bad idea to pay homage to the year before; so check out some of our displays from Fall 2016. We've had a lot of fun, some bumps in the road, and are ready for what's to come in 2017! |
